Cement soaks up greenhouse gases
While the initial heating of concrete produces a large amount of greenhouse gases, a new study suggests set concrete can actually absorb a significant portion of the emissions it originally released upon production. Through a process called carbonization, tiny pores in cement can trap up to 43 percent of CO2 released in converting limestone to concrete.
